BrightNews provides a positive-news reading experience and account-based save syncing. This policy explains what data BrightNews collects, how it is used, and how users can request deletion of their account data.

Who this policy applies to

This policy applies to BrightNews on web and mobile builds published under the BrightNews name.

Data BrightNews collects

• Account data such as email address, display name, and profile image when you sign in with Google.
• Saved-story data that you choose to sync to your account.
• Basic profile state used to operate the app, such as onboarding/admin flags where applicable.
• Local device data such as cached preferences and saved-story identifiers stored in local storage.

How BrightNews uses data

• To authenticate you and keep your session active.
• To sync saved stories across devices.
• To operate account features, moderation features, and core app functionality.
• To maintain app security, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot operational issues.

Service providers

BrightNews currently relies on third-party services including:

• Supabase for authentication, database storage, and account-related data.
• Google for sign-in and basic profile identity data made available through Google OAuth.
• News and content sources used to ingest and publish stories shown in the app.

Data sharing

BrightNews does not sell personal data. Data is shared only with infrastructure and service providers needed to operate the app, such as authentication, storage, and content services.

Retention

Account-related data is retained until the user requests deletion or until BrightNews no longer needs the data to operate the service. Certain records may be retained for a limited period where reasonably necessary for fraud prevention, security, legal compliance, or audit purposes.
